Why was my website compromised?

Last update: Aug 14, 2025

The most common reasons for having your website hacked are:

  1. Outdated web application – Keep your application updated to the latest available version to make sure that all core security vulnerabilities for it are patched;
  2. Outdated web application extensions;
  3. Plugins/modules/components downloaded from unofficial sources;
  4. Weak user/administrator passwords;
  5. Weak My Account/FTP accounts passwords;
  6. Infected local computer. Always make sure to have updated antivirus software and scan your computer for viruses regularly.

If you want the security of your WordPress site to be analysed by an expert, who will then provide you with recommendations on how to strengthen it to avoid security incidents, you can post a new Expert Care request in the Help Center section of your SiteGround User Area.
